Royal William Yard Plymouth

Today my children and I surprised my husband with a family lunch at the Royal William Yard.
The Royal William yard was a Royal Navy victualling yard until it closed in 1992.
It is also the largest collection of Grade One listed military buildings in Europe.
The yard was named after King William IV.  It was built between 1826 and 1835.
It was designed by architect Sir John Rennie.
There is a ferry to the yard from the Barbican. £3.00 per person each way.  It is worth paying the fee to take the ferry for a special trip.
The yard and Devil Point is a great place to view ships entering the Plymouth sound and Devonport.
If you are interested in military history, this is a great part of Plymouth to visit.

Plymouth Hoe

Some more photos from yesterday's visit to Plymouth Hoe.
We have had some very stormy weather recently.
Plymouth Hoe has been featured on the national news.
The Hoe has been bashed by giant waves during the storms.
The Hoe was very busy with locals wanting to view the harbour and enjoying a walk along the shore line .
Some people got a bit to close to the giant waves and got very wet.

Smeaton's Tower

All the years that I have lived in Devon, I have never been to the top of Smeaton's Tower until today.

Stairs leading to the Light.
Stairs to the light were easy to go up but coming down I needed to come down backwards!
Spiral stair case leads back down to the bottom.
The view from the window towards Plymouth Breakwater.
At the top the candle holder is the lantern/light.
Smeaton's Tower is only a small lighthouse but well worth a visit.

Craft Fayre

Today I had a table at Just Tracys craft fayre.  This is the second fayre this year at Just Tracys that I have attended with all my hand crafted items.
This fist photo shows the difficult time I was having fitting all my wares onto one table.  Sorry I do not know why the photo has turned to a side view, this is the first time in all my years blogging that this has happen to me.
And it has happen again! Never mind I am off to the Malvern Autumn Quilt show tomorrow with the girls. Do not forget the clocks change tonight.

Craft Fayre

Nicky, Sue and I booked a table each at a local craft fayre to sell our handmade items.  We each have different styles of  sewing.

I made lots of small items that would made good 'stocking fillers' gifts.  Travel tissue covers, pencil cases, make up cases and Easter egg flower bags.
The flower bags were popular as it is only a few days until Easter Sunday. These bags could be filled with creme eggs.
As you can see I made lots of flower bags.
Now we have to get sewing again to make lots of new items for the Christmas fayre in the autumn.

Weather Statistics

I live in a village in the South Hams of Devon.  About six miles from the edge of the city of Plymouth.

At the beginning of 2012 the meteorological office warned that we were going to experience a drought. We have a few months of sunshine then the heavens open and it rained and rained.
December 2012 was the wettest on record for Plymouth with 289cm of rain.  The previous record was 246cm.
South West England had the wettest year on record since 1910. Our reservoirs are 100% full.  That is alot to rain.
Provisional statistics from the Met Office show 2012 was the second wettest year in the UK national record dating back to 1910, and just a few millimetres short of the record set in 2000.

The Met Office has a very informative website. I am hoping for a drier and sunny 2013!

Remembrance Sunday

Every year on Remembrance Sunday, my family and I attend the service on the Hoe in Plymouth Devon. The Royal Navy War Memorial was surrounded by hundreds of people that had come to pay their respects.
The light house on the Hoe is called Smeaton's Tower.
